Bernadette Vella, co-founder of this great charity explains what they are all about for us.
Mummy’s Wish Inc is a Brisbane based charity, started in 2008, by two mothers who are cancer survivors. We aim support mothers diagnosed with cancer when they have a child under school age.
This support takes various forms.
- We provide a website full of information to assist women undergoing cancer treatment when they have young children, including links to other services and information about all forms of assistance available.
- We also provide women with someone to talk to who has been through what they are experiencing.
- We have donated child friendly products such as bottle warmers and port-a-cots to the oncology wards in hospitals in Brisbane.
- For mothers in SE Qld, we provide them with a treat bags full of donated products that will bring a smile to their face and brighten their day. The treat bags contain a variety of products including DVDs and toys for children, books for the mum and children, baby products, music CDs, various products useful when undergoing treatment and lots of other goodies.
- We have also made arrangements with local businesses to provide complimentary services to our mums such as portrait photography, trips to local attractions such as Australia Zoo and free parking at the hospitals.
- We can also assist them by loaning them a laptop with internet access and a webcam to enable them to communicate with their children and to ease the boredom when spending time in hospital (this can be particularly useful in enabling a mum to read her children at home bedtime stories).
- For mums in SE Qld we can also offer them a $500 treat. This treat is not financially assessed and is at the total discretion of the mum. An example of one of these treats was a mum that was in her final stages of advanced breast cancer who came to us when she had a very short time left. She desperately wanted some time alone with her husband to have a final goodbye. She was very ill by this stage and it was the week between Christmas and New Years. We arranged a weekend at a Brisbane hotel for her including a wheelchair, portable oxygen and room service. Her and her husband thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and she was admitted to hospital two days later and passed away soon after. Some other examples of things we have paid for are fuel for visits to hospital for treatments, grocery bills, yard maintenance, house cleaning, oxygen, wheelchairs, baby goods and new furniture.
Please get behind this absolutely wonderful charity and help spread the word. If you are a business or service that feels you can help this charity please contact them through their website, http://www.mummyswish.org.au
Cheers
